Kölcsey Manor

The Kölcsey Memorial House was the residence of Ferenc Kölcsey's parents. As a child, he stayed here continuously until he was 6 years old. Two sad events troubled the little child's soul during these two years: he lost the sight in his right eye and his father died suddenly at the age of 6. At that time, his uncle Sámuel and his mother enrolled him in the Debrecen Reformed College. He completed his studies here. He spent his vacations mainly in Álmosd. In 1810 he went to Pest for 2 years to practice law. From 1812 to April 1815 he farmed in Álmosd. He maintained a serious correspondence with his friends. Among others, he was a good friend of his father, Ferenc Kazinczy. The two of them did a lot for the development of the Hungarian language. In April 1815, he shared the estate with his brothers, and with his brother Ferenc K&oullcsey &Adam &ouccsé, he moved to Cseké. Their estates were also in Satu Mare County. He became involved in the political life of the county. At the 1832 – 36th Bratislava National Assembly, he spoke out strongly in favor of progress. As the chief notary of Satu Mare County, he fought for progress until the end of his life. He died suddenly and unexpectedly on August 24, 1838. He was buried in Satu Mare, where a very beautiful monument was erected in his honor. He wrote our National Anthem here on January 22, 1823. On this day, every year, the Czechs and the Kólcsey Society organize a beautiful celebration.
